WHAT IS THE COURSE ABOUT?

The course will teach you the signs, symptoms and basic pathology of specific stable conditions. You will also gain an understanding of the implications and effects of specific medications relating to those conditions. In addition, the course will deliver to you the principles of exercise referral for clients with specific controlled conditions.
Through the practical sessions you will learn how to plan, deliver, manage and evaluate a safe, effective and progressive adapted physical activity programme which is personalised to each individual client’s needs and lifestyle.

  • 4 days.
  • 1 practical assessment day.

WHO IS THE COURSE SUITABLE FOR?

Personal trainers or advanced instructors over 18 who are seeking to enhance their qualifications, or individuals who are already working in an exercise referral environment but who lack recognised qualifications.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS ARE NEEDED?

A Level 3 qualification in either personal training or advanced fitness instruction or other similar qualification.

WHAT WILL BE STUDIED?

The signs, symptoms, basic pathology and management of specific conditions in the following ranges:

  • Cardiovascular and respiratory
  • Mobility
  • Endocrine system
  • Overweight (clinical) obesity
  • Mental health-related
  • Multiple conditions

You will also study referral justifications, recommendations, contraindications and medications. Throughout the course you will study how to set up and coordinate an exercise referral scheme together with risk assessment and motivational interviewing.
Through the practical workshops you will learn how to plan, design and adapt progressive physical activity programmes for referral clients with controlled conditions.

  4. Practical teaching (25% weighting towards qualification)

All course materials will be provided. Additional reading may include the following:

  • ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription
  • 6th Edition National Quality Assurance Framework for Exercise Referral Schemes Exercise and Fitness Code of Ethics.

WHAT CAN THE QUALIFICATION LEAD TO?

Employment as a trainer or advanced instructor who can coordinate, manage and deliver specialist exercise sessions for clients with specific controlled conditions.
